5 Common Skincare Mistakes You Should Avoid (Summer 2020)

It’s easy to look at whatever other people are doing with skincare and follow suit. But unless you hear it from a professional, you definitely don’t want to blindly do what everyone else does. Often people end up making the same mistakes that could be harmful to your skin and skincare goals.
Especially as summer rolls into fall, it’s very important to understand what’s best for your skin to help it recover from the heat and prepare for the cold. To learn more about common skincare mistakes you should avoid, read our quick guide made by the skincare experts at Amy Brenner, MD & Associates

1. Not reapplying SPF

By this point, most people understand the importance of SPF to avoid sun damage and premature aging, but many still don’t reapply after sun exposure. It’s not enough to put on your SPF in the morning and call it a day. As the hours pass, its effects begin to wear off. While you’re in the sun, it’s best to always keep SPF on hand and reapply every two hours.

2. Avoiding moisturizer

If you’re someone with oily/combination skin, you may notice your skin getting even oiler in the summer. Your first thought could be, “Well, I don’t need moisturizer right now,” but no matter how oily your skin is, you never want to neglect moisturizer. In fact, not using moisturizer could cause your pores to go into overdrive and secrete more oil to compensate for the lack of moisture. Instead, try using an oil-free and/or clarifying moisturizer to keep your skin supple yet shine free.

3. Using exfoliants that are too harsh

Exfoliating your skin is a must to get rid of dead skin cells, but you want to make sure the exfoliator you use isn’t too harsh. If you notice that your skin becomes red or irritated, you may need to switch up what you’re using. You can also try out chemical exfoliants and peels instead of harsh scrubs!

4. You’re not taking care of your health

When you feed your body with unhealthy foods and drinks, it’s going to eventually show on the outside. Too much refined sugars and unhealthy fats could cause breakouts, and a lack of nutritionally dense foods could cause dullness. For your skin to truly shine, it’s important to eat a balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables along with drinking plenty of water each day.
