Endometriosis is a condition in which cells that are similar to the endometrial lining (or the lining of the uterus) implant in areas outside of the uterus, causing inflammation, pain and often leading to pelvic adhesions.

WHAT CAUSES ENDOMETRIOSIS?

The cause of endometriosis is not known; however, there are several theories:

• Retrograde menstruation: this is the backward movement of endometrial cells/menstrual fluids through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvis, where they can implant.
• Embryonic cell transformation: Hormones such as estrogen may transform embryonic cells — cells in the earliest stages of development — into endometrial cell implants during puberty.
• Surgical scar implantation. After a surgery, such as a hysterectomy or C-section, endometrial cells may attach to a surgical incision.
• Endometrial cells transport. The blood vessels or tissue fluid (lymphatic) system may transport endometrial cells to other parts of the body.
• Faulty immune system: The immune system is unable to detect and destroy endometrial tissue outside of the uterus.
