COVID-19

looking for covid-19 antibody testing?

Two Options

Are you curious about your exposure to COVID-19?

Have you recently been ill with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 with subsequent recovery?

Have you been compelled to screen for the presence of antibodies in order to be a plasma donor for someone who is critically ill?

We are now offering TWO options for antibody testing to our patients in an effort to facilitate further diagnosis and treatment, determine possible immunity and protection, and to identify candidates that may help save the lives of critically ill COVID-19 patients. Patients may choose between US BioTek, which is a self-pay option or our local lab, which is billed to your insurance.

what is covid-19 antibody testing?

Once infected with the COVID-19 virus, your immune system develops antibodies in an attempt to fight the virus. IgM is the antibody that appears early, approximately 3-5 days after infection, and is the “first-line of defense.” IgG is the antibody that appears later, within 3-4 weeks, and replaces IgM as the body’s primary defense system. These antibodies are developed to seek and destroy the virus. If both IgM and IgG are positive simultaneously, this indicates a late active infection or transition into the recovery phase of infection. When IgG is positive a patient has presumptive immunity.

The antibody test is not meant to diagnose or exclude the COVID-19 viral infection.  A positive test may indicate a past or present non-COVID-19 coronavirus strain.  Diagnosis of COVID-19 needs to be confirmed with more advanced testing.  Similarly, a negative test does not rule out COVID-19.  This may indicate very early disease without sufficient time to mount an immune response.  If a patient is immunocompromised by a medical condition or medication use, they may never mount a sufficient immune response for antibody testing.

Why Choose the US BioTek kit for Antibody Testing?

We know that accuracy, turnaround time, and clinical application are all factors for choosing which antibody test to use, so we made sure to account for them when Amy Brenner, MD & Associates researched all the current options. Below are just three reasons why the US BioTek COVID-19 Antibody Test was our first choice:

  1. This COVID-19 Antibody Test can serve as a valuable tool in the fight against the disease by identifying individuals with recent or prior exposure to the virus.
  2. It uses a state-of-the-art, highly sensitive chemiluminescence-based platform to run the antibody panel. These tests are developed and manufactured in the US and offer the most accurate IgM and IgG coronavirus testing currently available.
  3. Once the specimen has been received by their lab, you can expect test results in 2-3 days.

If patients prefer the insurance billed option through our local lab, only the IgG antibodies are tested and results can be expected in 2 days.

Antibody Testing Process and Results
Consultation Blood Labs Results

Every patient considering a COVID-19 antibody test must have a Telemedicine appointment with one of our medical providers first. At this appointment the provider will explain the purpose of this test, and if a patient decides to proceed with testing, one of our schedulers will set the blood draw appointment.

US BioTek

The antibody test requires a blood sample to be spun and shipped to US BioTek Laboratories.  Our phlebotomists at Amy Brenner, MD & Associates will draw your blood (by appointment only) and submit to US BioTek Laboratories where the specimen can be analyzed.

Local Lab

Our phlebotomists at Amy Brenner, MD & Associates will draw your blood (by appointment only) and the results will be processed locally.

The laboratory estimates a 2-3 day turn around for results. from US BioTek and 2 days for the local lab. Once the results have returned from the laboratory, you will be notified of your results using the “FollowMyHealth” patient portal.

The test will show “reactive” or “non-reactive” results for both IgM and IgG antibodies from US BioTek.

FAQ's
Is this test FDA Approved?

Serology testing is recommended by the FDA to detect patients who have been exposed to or who have recovered from the COVID-19 viral infection. Similar to most, if not all, COVID-19 serology tests, the US BioTek Laboratories IgG/IgM Chemiluminescent Antibody Detection test that we are offering has not yet been FDA approved. However, the test has been authorized for use following the FDA Policy for Diagnostic Tests for COVID-19 during the Public Health Emergency. For further clarification, the testing platform used by the US BioTek Laboratories for processing is an FDA-cleared device. Also, the accuracy and reliability of the US BioTek Laboratories IgG/IgM Chemiluminescent Antibody Detection test is based on human testing with excellent sensitivity and specificity (95% and 97%, respectively).

What is the cost and can this be billed to my insurance?

The cost is $150.00 self-pay and requires the patient to sign a Non-Covered Service Waiver. The manufacturer has provided a CPT code that the patient can choose to submit independently to their private insurance carrier for possible reimbursement. This is not guaranteed and is the full responsibility of each individual patient.
