Hypogonadism is simply a fancy word for low testosterone. When your gonads (the testes in men) can’t produce the proper amount of testosterone to maintain proper bodily function, it can lead to other health conditions.
Our doctors Amy Brenner, MD & Associates believe that the first step in treatment is answering the simple question of what is hypogonadism. That way patients can make the best decisions to improve their health.
The importance of testosterone
Hypogonadism leads to symptoms of low testosterone in men. Since the hormone aids with bodily functions such as sexual wellness, red blood cell production, muscle and bone mass, and more, low testosterone can lead to:
- Decreased libido
- Anemia
- Hair loss
- Loss of muscle mass
- Bone fragility
- Fatigue
- Low sperm count
- Sleep issues
Who is affected by hypogonadism?
Hypogonadism can affect males at all stages of life, though if it happens before adulthood it’s usually due to a medical condition such as injury or genetic disease.
Fetal development
As early as seven weeks post-conception, testosterone works to advance male development in the womb. But if the fetus doesn’t produce enough testosterone, it can lead to a growth stunt of the external sex organs.
Puberty
Hypogonadism in adolescent boys can impact the progression of puberty. That means it could affect how the voice deepens, hair growth, muscle mass, and sexual organ growth.
Adulthood
Natural aging, medical conditions, certain medications, and other factors can cause hypogonadism in men. This could affect sexual function as well as overall health.
