Enlarged Labia FAQ
What are treatments & procedures for an enlarged labia?
When searching for treatments and procedures for an enlarged labia, national searches often start with questions like, “I have an enlarged labia; what do I do?” The answer at Amy Brenner, MD & Associates depends on your specific needs, but we have the resources and skills to address your concerns.
We have 3 treatments that can address labia concerns. These include:
- Labiaplasty minora
- Labiaplasty majora
- AVIVA FemTite
What causes enlarged labia?
Many things cause enlarged labia. Women may experience enlarged labia because of:
- Genetics
- Childbirth
- Pregnancy
- Aging
Why do women decide to have procedures to treat enlarged labia?
All labia procedures are elective and can address the mental and physical discomfort many women feel from this condition.
Physically, women may notice their enlarged labia when working out, wearing tight-fitting clothing, or engaging in sexual intercourse. Sometimes, the size and shape of labia minora and majora can cause skin to rub, cause friction, and, as a result, become irritated and inflamed.
Mentally, women may feel frustrated with how their labia look. Their appearance and feel can cause self-consciousness during sexual intercourse, making intimate situations uncomfortable.
What does labiaplasty minora do? What happens during this surgery?
We use labiaplasty minora to address the size and shape of the inner vaginal lips.
Before scheduling your labiaplasty, we’ll have a consultation where you can ask questions about labiaplasty and find out if this procedure is right for you.
The Procedure
Before the surgery begins, your medical care team will administer local anesthesia and oral sedation to keep your discomfort and stress low during the procedure. If you’d prefer, we can also use IV sedation.
Once the anesthesia and sedation are administered, we’ll use the Ellman Surgitron tool to remove unwanted tissue. This tool features a cool tip, eliminating unnecessary thermal damage to the skin and allowing Dr. Brenner to make precise incisions. After removing the excess skin, Dr. Brenner will use self-dissolvable sutures to stitch the area, which will dissolve in 6 weeks. The whole procedure takes 1 to 2 hours.
What are my labiaplasty minora options?
We offer 3 different options! While the following options are similar, they differ in how much skin you choose to remove:
RIM Labiaplasty
This surgery is the most conservative of all our options. We’ll only remove excess, bulging skin, leaving a smaller rim of the labia minora that’s above the level of the labia majora. This creates a natural look.
Barbie Labiaplasty
As the name suggests, this procedure removes the entire labia minora for a refined look. We recommend combining this procedure with a clitoral hood reduction for the best results.
Hybrid Labiaplasty
This surgery is our moderate offering; we significantly reduce the size of your labia minora but still leave part of it. We also recommend combining this surgery with a clitoral hood reduction for the best results.
What does labiaplasty majora do? How does this procedure differ from labiaplasty minora?
During labiaplasty majora, Dr. Brenner will remove excess, sagging skin from the labia majora (the outer vaginal lips). This procedure resembles labia minora surgery because we use similar anesthesia and techniques. It’s also similar in duration.
Do you offer non-surgical labiaplasty? How do I know this is an option for me?
AVIVA FemTite is a scarless, non-surgical treatment for tightening and toning excess skin from the labia minora and labia majora. It uses radiofrequency (RF) to trigger the body to produce collagen and elastin in the treatment area.
This procedure will have the best results for women experiencing mild to moderate labia minora elongation and mild to moderate labia majora laxity. We also use AVIVA to treat:
- Loose or excess clitoral hood skin
- Introitus, gaping vagina
- Mons pubis laxity
Procedure
Before this treatment begins, we’ll use tumescent anesthesia and topical numbing cream and offer patients ProNox, a self-delivery nitrous oxide system that can ease anxiety.
During the 1-hour procedure, Dr. Brenner will make a tiny incision and guide the AVIVA handpiece under the skin to treat the area with RF. After using AVIVA, Dr. Brennerr will use Morpheus8 to encourage skin tightening.
How long will it take me to recover from my procedure?
Recovery time depends on the treatment you have for enlarged labia.
Labia Minora and Labia Majora Surgery
Directly following your procedure, you’ll likely experience mild to moderate swelling and some blood spotting. Patients often need 1 to 2 weeks of bed rest. It takes 6 to 8 weeks to recover fully. We will help manage post-surgery discomfort through prescription or over-the counter pain medications, and we recommend not using tampons for 1 cycle.
AVIVA Recovery
Patients should abstain from sexual intercourse and not use tampons for 2 weeks after this procedure. You will also need to avoid taking NSAIDs for 3 days after the treatment. To help your recovery process, we’ll send you home with compression stockings to wear for a week after AVIVA. You’ll also need to apply a cream to protect your vulva for a week following treatment. Most AVIVA side effects are mild and include redness, swelling, and mild discomfort.
Do you provide other types of cosmetic gynecology procedures?

- Clitoral Hood Reduction: The elimination of excess skin on the sides of the clitoris.

Do you have patient testimonials I can read? What about before and after pictures?
Yes, and yes! The following are 2 recent reviews from patients who had labiaplasty minora. You can also browse our before and after gallery to see how we’ve helped clients like you.
Testimonial 1:
“Amazing! All around exceptional. I waited too long to have this procedure. I was not happy with my vagina after a bartholin cyst and 5 children. It was just ugly and uncomfortable. Stephanie and Dr. Brenner are wonderful. Very professional and skilled. Also humorous which I appreciate.
They were quick to reply to my msgs and address my concerns. Dr. Brenner called to check on me the night of my surgery. Much appreciated. I stayed awake for surgery which was ok. The pain afterward was expected but the outcome is like they said just beautiful.
I’m told my surgery was one of the harder ones due to the condition of my vagina lol but you would not know that now. It is beautiful. I’m in love with it. I would absolutely recommend this office, procedure and this dr. Over and over. I feel like I can’t thank them enough.”
Testimonial 2:
“Great experience! Love the staff and Dr. Brenner! I love the results and am so happy I did the procedure with them. Would recommend to anyone! Also, they gave the option for no pain meds and everything was tolerable!!! 10/10”
