How to Prevent Acne: Simple Daily Habits for Clear Skin

A woman applying her new skincare product in the mirror after learning how to prevent acne.

When it comes to treating acne, prevention is far more effective than any other approach. Acne often creates a self-perpetuating cycle, with bacteria and inflammation worsening itself. Preventing acne saves you the headache of blemishes, further breakouts, and scarring.

Amy Brenner, MD & Associates, our medispa in Cincinnati, can teach you how to prevent acne by establishing small, skin-clearing habits. Discover our tips here!

Cleanse Your Face Properly

When excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria make their way into your pores, it triggers inflammation and other biological processes that can result in a pimple forming. Washing your face properly removes these acne-causing invaders, reducing your chance of having breakouts.

We recommend washing your face twice daily using a gentle non-comedogenic (formulated to avoid clogging pores) cleanser suited for your skin type—whether it be normal, dry, oily, combination, or sensitive.

If you wear makeup or sunscreen, we encourage double cleansing to address both the surface layer of products and the deeper buildup of impurities.

Minimize Contact With Your Face

Every time you touch your face, you transfer germs and oils to your skin, which can clog your pores and lead to pimples. Be aware of where you put your hands and belongings, as some surfaces may harbor more harmful substances than others.

Sanitizing your phone and hands frequently prevents bacteria buildup and can reduce the amount of impurities that reach your face. It’s also best to keep your hands and phone away from your face whenever possible to minimize your skin’s exposure to foreign objects.

Keep Everything That Touches Your Face Clean

Because you can’t completely protect your face from the outside world, it’s helpful to keep your belongings clean and sanitary. For example, change your pillowcases at least twice a week, wipe down workout equipment before and after each use, and wash your makeup brushes weekly.
For items like fabrics and other porous materials, cleaning alone isn’t always enough, so replacing them periodically is best.

Be Patient With Your Skin Care Routine

Because it can take up to 90 days for a pimple to fully form, you might still see blemishes even after you’ve maintained a good skin care routine for some time. Give your new habits a chance to work by being consistent for at least 3 months.
