LEEP is an abbreviation for loop electrosurgical excision procedure. The LEEP procedure is a 10 minute, simple treatment for abnormal cells on the cervix where the abnormal cells are cut away using a thin wire loop that carries an electrical current. A LEEP may be recommended if your Pap smear or cervical biopsy showed some abnormal cell results.

Step 1.
Preparation
All LEEP treatments are performed by board-certified gynecologists. This procedure is performed in our AAASF certified office. It can either be performed under local or IV anesthesia.
Step 2. (Optional)
IV Sedation Available
Since our office is accredited by AAAASF, we can offer IV sedation for LEEP procedures if you’re anxious about having this procedure done under local anesthesia.
OR A numbing medication (lidocaine with epinephrine) is injected into your cervix. This usually causes your heart to beat faster or cause you to have a feeling like you drank a lot of caffeine.
Step 3.
Procedure
A speculum is inserted into your vagina. A vinegar-like solution is applied to the abnormal cells more visible. The doctor then uses an electrical wire loop to remove the abnormal tissue. The tissue is sent to the pathologist to be tested.
Step 4.
Prevent Bleeding
Blood vessels on the area are sealed to prevent bleeding. The doctor may also apply a special paste — Monsel’s Solution — to prevent bleeding.
Step 5.
Post Procedure
After the procedure you may have some spotting, brown discharge that has been described as “coffee grounds” from the Monsel’s solution.
Step 6.
Results
This procedure gives your gynecologist a better idea of what’s going on with the abnormal cells. Your doctor at Amy Brenner MD & Associates will recommend the right treatment based on your results.

There is no single cause of abnormal cervical cells. However, extra precautions and examinations are necessary to prevent cervical cancer. Again, an abnormal test does not mean you have cancer. In fact, the chances of cancer are very small. Other causes like the HPV virus, smoking or an impaired immune system can increase your chance of abnormal cervical cell formation.
