As the years go on, virtually everyone’s skin changes depending on their lifestyle, environment, and level of sun exposure. Dehydration, lack of sun protection, and many other factors can directly or indirectly affect the appearance of your skin. These can lead to:
- Sun spots
- Age spots
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Skin laxity (sagging)
- Freckles
- Small facial vessels
Other concerns can occur from genetics and innate skin conditions like inflammation. Rosacea, flushing, and acne can happen at any age.
All of this is to say, it’s natural for your skin to experience these conditions or change throughout the years. Though aging is a gift, it’s understandable that these conditions may cause you to feel self-conscious or impact your confidence in your skin. So what if a treatment could actually reverse these conditions? ⏳
Meet our latest addition to Amy Brenner, MD & Associates: our BBL facial treatment in Cincinnati. BBL™ stands for BroadBand Light, and though lasers are the primary form of skin rejuvenation for many, this special form of light energy is clinically proven to reverse time at a molecular level, making you appear years younger.
Our BBL technology is even more special because it is Sciton’s latest advancement, BBL HERO®. HERO stands for High Energy Rapid Output™. This handpiece allows us to treat anywhere on the body with better results and faster treatment times.

What is the difference between IPL and BBL?
As with any industry, medical aesthetics loves acronyms! IPL and BBL are two forms of light energy commonly discussed and sometimes used interchangeably. Let’s go a little more in-depth about each.
What is IPL?
IPL is an acronym for Intense Pulsed Light. There are two major forms of energy used to rejuvenate your skin: lasers and light. You can think of light as the flash from photography on a grander scale. Skin can absorb this light energy (like how it can absorb sunlight), and convert it into heat. This heat can help clear pigment, like age spots, and kick starts your body’s natural collagen production, improving your skin from within!
Is IPL a laser?
This is a common misconception! IPL is not a laser. IPL and laser are two separate forms of energy used to improve skin. Light energy uses multiple wavelengths to thermally heat the skin and improve concerns. Lasers only use one wavelength to heat the skin and achieve resurfacing.
One of the biggest advantages of IPL over lasers is that IPL requires little to no downtime for recovery!
What’s the difference between BBL and IPL?
BBL is a form of IPL. You can think of IPL as the grandmother of BBL. It came first, and BBL built on this technology to make it even more powerful, falling under the IPL family tree. BBL is more advanced and with the exclusive HERO technology, it achieves greater results faster!
How BBL “reprograms” the age of your skin
BroadBand Light goes deep within skin cells to activate genes associated with youth and turns off genes associated with aging. This creates more types of proteins and other cell building-blocks of younger skin. New skin cells have this same programming, presenting as much younger skin cells. 1
So how do we know this? A groundbreaking research study performed at Stanford University in 2013 concluded that BBL can restore gene expression patterns of photoaged skin to resemble younger skin.
What’s so exciting is another long-term clinical study found that patients who received regular BBL treatments throughout a 10-year period were judged to appear 11 years younger than their age at the study’s end! 2

The BBL facial treatment process at Amy Brenner, MD & Associates
Consultation
Before your treatment, we’ll make sure this is the best treatment for you with a free consultation at our office located in Mason, OH. Your provider will take several high-resolution photos of your skin using our VISIA software. This helps us determine specific areas to focus on and the extent of any damage.
Using this information, we’ll recommend how many BBL facial treatments you’ll need to achieve your desired results.
BBL facial treatment
Before we start, we’ll prep your skin, apply a clear gel, and mark any areas to avoid (such as a mole, tattoo, or permanent makeup). We’ll also provide protective eyewear that you’ll wear throughout the treatment for safety.
We’ll use the BBL HERO handpiece to deliver BroadBand Light to your skin with precise pulses. With the HERO handpiece, this process is quickly completed due to the rolling technology. This is vastly different from regular IPL treatments that can take up to a full hour, depending on the treated area(s). We’ll finish the treatment by removing the gel and applying a hydrating cream and sunscreen to protect your skin post-treatment.
After the treatment
Your skin may appear red or flushed right after the treatment; this usually fades within hours. If you have prominent hyperpigmentation spots, you may notice these areas become darker for 10 to 14 days before they eventually flake away to reveal clear, new skin cells from beneath.
Immediately After BBL HERO 👇
There is virtually no downtime after BBL. You should continue a good at-home skincare regimen to maintain your results and protect your skin from sun exposure. Many patients receive maintenance treatments every year to continue their antiaging routine.

FAQs | BBL Facial Treatment in Cincinnati
How many BBL treatments will I need?
The number of BBL facial treatments you will need varies from patient to patient! Your clinician will create a personalized treatment plan based on your goals and depth of concerns. Your clinician may also combine your treatment with other skin procedures to optimize your results.
Remember that regular treatments—at least once a year—have been proven to stop the aging process, allowing patients to look younger than they did when they started treatment 10 years prior!
What should I expect after the treatment?
After your BBL facial treatment, you may experience some redness that should resolve within a few hours. Some pigmented lesions will darken before they eventually fade and flake off at a later stage. Your treated skin will feel smoother, pores will be less noticeable, and sunspots or uneven pigmentation will fade.
Final results depend on your condition, the number of treatments, and treatment areas.
What aftercare plan do I need?
It is important to follow your clinician’s treatment plan, and this includes post-care! We will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions and may give you some skincare products as needed.
It’s important to remember you will be sensitive to UV light, so you must avoid direct sun exposure until completely healed. Protect your skin by fully covering up and using high-quality sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher!
