Keep reading to learn the key difference between a hemorrhoid and skin tag.
What is a hemorrhoid?
A hemorrhoid is a swollen or enlarged vein that can either be inside or outside of the anus. This swelling is typically painful, and could even cause bleeding. Hemorrhoids may stem from:
- Excess weight
- Straining due to constipation
- Sitting on the toilet for too long
- Anal damage
- Or any other factor that causes pressure in area
Treatment: You can sometimes use creams and ointments to treat hemorrhoids or you may have to take more extensive measures such as getting a hemorrhoidectomy.
What is an anal skin tag?
An anal skin tag is a small bump around the outside of the anus. In many cases they are benign, but you should always check with a doctor to know for sure. Unlike hemorrhoids, anal skin tags aren’t necessarily painful, but they can cause discomfort.
The reason why people often confuse an anal skin tag with a hemorrhoid is because anal skin tags can come from a healed hemorrhoid. However, they may also come from other types of injuries that lead to scarring and excess skin.
