The endocrine system is one of the most important aspects of your health that is often overlooked by primary care providers. At Amy Brenner, MD & Associates, we specialize in optimizing the wellbeing of our patients through a variety of wellness services. Many patients contact us asking, “How can I fix my adrenals?”
Your adrenal glands are a part of your endocrine system, and they release several hormones that are essential, including: cortisol and adrenaline, and a couple other hormones.
If you’re suspicious that your adrenal glands aren’t functioning as they should, here’s what you can do!
How to fix your adrenals
Understand the 3 stages of adrenal dysfunction
Many patients who visit us are experiencing one or more of the symptoms above and fall into one of the 3 stages of adrenal dysfunction. Being in any of these states over an extended period of time can negatively affect your health and wellness.
1. No sleep/fight or flight
You may be experiencing insomnia or getting away with very little sleep while still feeling energized. Your sympathetic nervous system is consistently in fight or flight mode, leaving you feeling anxious, “wired tired,” and other forms of distress.
2. High highs and low lows
This stage of adrenal dysfunction is more of an ebb and flow, where you feel very energized one day and very low energy the next. Your other symptoms may also change depending on if you’re in a peak or valley state.
3. Always tired no matter the amount of sleep
If you’re feeling extreme fatigue or exhaustion when you’re getting more than enough sleep, it could be a sign of adrenal dysfunction. These glands may not be doing their job at all, creating a very unbalanced sleep cycle and leading to other symptoms.
