How Do Vitamin B 12 Injections Work?

B12 is an essential vitamin for the proper development and function of the brain, nervous system, and red blood cells. B12 is involved in metabolism of every cell of the body, especially affecting DNA synthesis, fatty acid and amino acid metabolism. Our only dietary source of Vitamin B12 is animal proteins (other than some fortified cereals). For many of us, we choose not to eat large quantities of red meat or are instructed not to do so for cholesterol and cardiac reasons.

In addition, Vitamin B12 absorption can be blocked by medications (including heart burn medication, Metformin for diabetes, and birth control pills), and Vitamin B12 absorption decreases as we age. For this reason, Vitamin B12 deficiency is extremely common and often not properly screened for in routine blood work.
