What You Should Know About Endometrial Ablation and Pregnancy

If you’re considering an endometrial ablation to treat heavy menstruation, you have probably heard physicians warn about having children. Since the procedure impacts fertility,  Amy Brenner, MD & Associates does not recommend our MyFlow® ablation procedures on women who want children. Read on to learn what you should know about endometrial ablation and pregnancy. Can I get pregnant after an endometrial ablation?
Endometrial ablation does not necessarily sterilize you, but pregnancy after the procedure isn’t likely. Without the lining, it would be hard for an egg to plant into the uterine wall. However, some women have gotten pregnant even after the procedure.
In the rare case that this happens, these become high-risk pregnancies, and the chances of miscarriage are greatly increased. At the end of the day, it wouldn’t be a safe pregnancy for you or the fetus. Therefore, it’s still important to use contraception or get a sterilization procedure.
If you still plan on having children, we recommend alternative solutions to lighten periods such as:

  • Birth control
  • Hormone therapies
  • Dilation and curettage

If I don’t want to get pregnant, am I a candidate for endometrial ablation?

Whether or not you want to get pregnant is not the only factor that determines candidacy. While the procedure works great for many women, it’s not for all women. Candidates are typically women who suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding that come from benign factors. With that said, the only true way to your candidacy for endometrial ablation is through a physician examination.
When you come in for a consultation at Amy Brenner, MD & Associates, we will do a thorough examination, including:

  • Your medical history
  • Medications you take
  • The source of your heavy bleeding
  • Family history
  • And more

This allows us to obtain the full picture so we can recommend endometrial ablation or a different treatment option. We can also give you realistic details about what you can expect after your MyFlow® procedure.
