The connection between weight loss, gut health, and hormones
Oftentimes, there is more to your weight loss journey than unwanted fat. Maybe you aren’t looking to lose weight at all, but you’re experiencing unexplained symptoms other doctors haven’t helped with.
If you’ve experienced unexplained weight loss plateaus, extreme stomach bloating, or other medical symptoms related to your digestion, gut health and/or hormones may be the root cause.
What is Gut Health?
When we refer to the gut, we refer to your entire digestive system: your stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and even your mouth. Your gut also has an important role in vitamin absorption, so if it’s not functioning properly, you will feel the effects!
One common gut health issue we commonly see is SIBO, which stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. This condition is when there is too much of a normal bacteria in the gut, damaging the small intestine, and causing many symptoms such as:
- Bloating caused by gas in the small intestine
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Malnutrition / poor vitamin absorption
Many of the above symptoms can have a domino effect. For example, if you are experiencing malnutrition, you may also begin experiencing hair loss, leaky gut, reduced appetite, low energy, and a range of other conditions.
This also means your weight loss efforts may easily plateau, as your body is not functioning like it should for energy, detoxification through waste, and nutrition absorption.
At Amy Brenner MD, & Associates, we offer multiple types of testing to treat these symptoms and more:
- Small intestine testing for SIBO
- Food sensitivity testing
- Stool testing to check on large intestine function
What about colonoscopies?
Colonoscopies are still very insightful to ensure there are no structural issues. They are also super important for colon cancer detection and polyp detection. If you are experiencing symptoms like the above and only get a colonoscopy for testing, you may leave with an Irritable Bowel Syndrome diagnosis that is caused by SIBO.

Gut health and hormones
Another important aspect of good gut health is balanced hormones. One of the principal regulators of circulating estrogens is the gut microbiome. Estrogen helps regulate body fat in women and also is important for reproductive and cardiovascular health. Estrogen in men is important for the function of libido and sperm production.
Your gut helps regulate your body, including hormones, in the following ways:
- Helps synthesize and regulate hormones
- Absorbs macronutrients and micronutrients
- Supports immune system health
- Aids in regulating estrogen levels
When your gut is unhealthy, your hormones may also be out of balance, causing a variety of symptoms, such as:
- Low energy
- Mood swings
- Unexplained weight gain
- Low libido

What to look for in a wellness and weight loss doctor or professional
Your results are only as good as your provider. It’s super important to make the best decision for yourself when it comes to finding solutions for gut health and weight loss, so make sure to look for the following traits in your weight loss doctor.
A weight loss results portfolio with measurable results
Your provider should be able to show you past patient medical weight loss results from their program offerings. Of course, everyone’s body is different, so your results can vary based on your body type, weight loss goals, and other factors.
Before:
After:
It can be helpful to ask:
- Did these patients overcome any medical symptoms or barriers to their weight loss to achieve these results?
- Do any of these patients look similar to me in build, age, or body type?
- Are their results similar to what I’m looking for?
- Are there certain areas where they lost weight that I’d also like to improve?
- Am I ready to make the same type of commitment as this person to achieve similar results?
Patient testimonials
Along with before and after photos, patient testimonials can give you a really good insight on what it was like to work with the providers. Look at testimonials on their website, Google Business Profile reviews, and online directories such as Real Self and ShareCare.
Below are a few patient testimonials for our wellness programs at Amy Brenner, MD & Associates:
“I had not been feeling well for several years. One specialist would send me to the next specialist and so on. I never would get any answers. I spent thousands and thousands of dollars on doctors just treating the symptoms. A coworker told me to go to Amy Brenners office. I didn’t have much hope when I walked in, but when I had my first visit with Dr. Thieman, she listened to me. She understood me and truly wanted to help me. I am so grateful for this practice. It has completely changed me and I feel good again! Thank you!” – Roxanne G.
“I’ve been a patient of this practice for a little over a year. Beyond having beautiful and clean facility, the staff is exceptional. It is clear that the staff members enjoy their jobs, love what they do, and they are extremely patient focused. Everyone I’ve dealt with was beyond competent in their duties. I love that the office is so focused on overall health, not just the Western Medicine basics. This is the first provider to ever discuss hormone testing and treatment with me. This practice will completely change your overall health- in a good way. Be prepared to feel and look your best! Thank you Dr. Brenner and ALL of your staff for providing the services you do!” – Marjorie G.
“I have been on the AB Wellness program since March of 2022. I have had an amazing experience being on the program. My positive experience has everything to do with how I have been treated by their staff. From the front office staff to Becca (AB Wellness program advisor) I have had the best treatment and care a patient could as for. I recommend Amy Brenner and her staff for all of your patient needs.” – Shannon C.

For weight loss particularly, the last thing we want for you as a patient is achieving stellar results but gaining the weight back easily. There are many factors that can contribute to your weight or periods of weight gain. Because of this, it’s important to treat weight at the source.
